GM Mark Wiley’s Integrated Eskrima DLP

Apprentice Instructor – Distance Learning Program

Welcome to Tambuli Media’s comprehensive DLP (Distance Learning Program) on the art of Integrated Eskrima — developed and structured by FMA historian and grandmaster, Dr. Mark Wiley — whose name and work has become synonymous with Filipino martial arts, as his training has taken him to the greatest legends and masters in the Philippines and the United States, most of whom are no longer with us.

After three decades of training and research, trial and error, Dr. Wiley has truly developed a unique and in-depth conceptual system called Integrated Eskrima. This is a system of optimized martial training intended to drastically enhance learning, power development, movement integration, and strategic application across classical and modern methods of FMA.

For over 35 years, Dr. Wiley has researched and traveled all over the United States and up and down the Philippines to interview, learn and experience the classical and modern systems of FMA from many of its most famous and legendary Grandmasters, and many of its unknown treasures. If we drill down to its core methods, Integrated Eskrima is most influenced by:

– The fundamental strikesblocks and locks of Remy Presas

– The tight maneuvering and reflex training of Angel Cabales

– The stroke training and disarming concepts of Herminio Binas

– The progressive joint locks and strikes of Florendo Visitacion

– The double sticks and merging methods of Ramiro Estalilla

– The power strikes and limb control of Benjamin Luna Lema

– The timing and sword techniques of Antonio Ilustrisimo

The backbone of Dr. WIley’s optimized martial training method is known as IMT, or Integrated Modular Training. This method to mastery targets the full integration of the core martial tactics of the old FMA Masters as categorized and integrated into the IMT method through Dr. Wiley’s analytical and experiential lens.

The Framework of Integrated Eskrima

The 8 DLP Courses contain 117 Lessons that make up the Apprentice Instructor Program of Integrated Eskrima, Dr. Wiley teaches you how to master the art by Training then Linking and then Integrating the techniques and tactical application. The content meticulously presented in these 8 courses provides the core material of the remainder of the system. The following outlines the unique training and system structure or “framework” of Integrated Eskrima.

IE is rooted in a Comprehensive Conceptual Framework

– A Training Structure with a Clear Method to Mastery…

– Key Words That Explain Movement and Technique…

– Weapons Categories and their Application Classifications…

– A Study of Integral Methods, including: Body Framework, Technique Structure, and Power Base; Footwork and Striking Methods; Angles and Targets of Attack; Primary and Secondary Techniques and Supporting Techniques; Counters, Locks and Dsarms and their Reversals; Feinting Maneuvers and more…

– Maxims or Rules for Tactical Application…

– Specific Training for Controlling of Range and Gate…

– Modes of Engagement, Reference Points and Counter Sets…

– Rules of Range, Footwork and Technique…

– Specific Training Methods to Master Control of Timing and Position.

IE is Rooted in a Comprehensive Movement Framework

– Footwork Methods

– Striking Methods

– Primary Defensive Techniques

– Secondary Techniques

– Supporting Techniques

– Weapon and Opponent Positional Theory

– Movements to Control of Range, Gate and Position

IE is Rooted in a Comprehensive Training Framework

The training framework of IE is its most unique component. Dr. Mark Wiley spent over a decade developing what became known as the Integrated Modular Training method (or IMT for short).

IMT is built around the platform of an expandable Nucleus Drill, wherein as new Modules (blocks of information) are Linked and Integrated with previously learned Modules. Integrated Eskrima’s modular teaching progression is based on first Linking methods and techniques and then Integrating them with the other methods and techniques as applicable. Therefore, as each new Module or block of information is learned, its conceptual parameters are understood and it is made fully functional with what has been learned thus far.

There is also a mental component wherein shifts in psychological states occur as the Nucleus Drill expands, thus restructuring a passive mind into an active mind and then into a focused, centered and unwavering mind.

The highest form of Integrated Eskrima is Lusot Sara Tapos—a blade-derived method of “leaking, flowing and finishing” that is like water flowing down stream: it moves around obstructions and fills voids and crevices, as opposed to being obstructed by them.

The optimal goal of the system is to discard blocks, to always move forward, to strike without being struck, and above all, to finish the encounter as quickly as possible. There are no extraneous techniques or drills just to make the art “look cool” or to be “more fun,” as this distracts from its purpose.

Course 1 –  DNA: The System Structure

Course 1 teaches Integrated Eskrima’s “Essential Structure,” the DNA “Building Blocks” of EVERYTHING in the system. This is the Functional Material that builds the Framework upon which the Entire System is built. This “System Structure” Course includes the following 7 Modules: 1) System Overview, 2) Weapon Grips, 3) Striking Energies, 4) Stances, Guards and Body Box, 5) Fighting Ranges, 6) Positional Gates, and 7) Modes of Engagement. This material is essential. Do NOT Skip This Course!

Course 2 – Footwork Dynamics

Course 2 teaches Footwork Dynamics, or the footwork methods and their specific strategic application. All technique applications in Integrated Eskrima begin with footwork because it provides the strategic positional advantage we seek. Footwork must be learned and ingrained in muscle memory before the defensive techniques are trained. This Course includes 13 units: an Introduction and 2 modules consisting of 6 lessons each. You will learn the strategic positional foundation of 6 Lateral and Advancing Steps and 6 Retreating Steps that will help you control Range and Gate. This forms the strategic essence of the art.

Course 3 – Angles of Attack, Striking Methods & Combinations

Course 3 teaches the comprehensive Striking System utilized in Integrated Eskrima. This course includes 18 lesson divided into 4 Distinct Content Modules: 1) The 12 Angles of Attack practiced stationary and then with 3 different Footwork Methods; 2) A Breakdown of 5 Unique Striking Methods; 3) The 4 Fundamental 2-Strike Combinations Matched with Specific Footwork to Control Range and Gate; and 4) The 5 Essential 5-Strike Follow-up Combinations. All of these striking details and skills are necessary to master the defensive techniques presented in later courses.

Course 4 – Angle 1 Defensive Templates

Course 4 pulls together the concepts and material of the previous courses into comprehensive Defensive Templates against Angle 1 attacks. This course includes 4 Module Units comprised of 18 lessons. These 18 lessons teach different defensive methods within Integrated Eskrima’s unique Mode Defense model. Included are 5 Mode 1 Defensive Techniques; 5 Mode 2 Defensive Techniques; 4 Mode 3 Defensive Techniques; and 4 Mode 4 Defensive Techniques. This makes a total of 18 defensive counters against Angle 1.

Course 5 – Angle 2 Defensive Templates

Course 5 pulls together the concepts and material of the previous courses into comprehensive Defensive Templates against Angle 2 attacks. This course includes 4 Module Units comprised of 14 lessons. These 14 lessons teach different defensive methods within Integrated Eskrima’s unique Mode Defense model. Included are 3 Mode 1 Defensive Techniques; 4 Mode 2 Defensive Techniques; 4 Mode 3 Defensive Techniques; and 3 Mode 4 Defensive Techniques This makes a total of 14 defensive counters against Angle 2.

Course 6 – Angle 3 Defensive Templates

Course 6 pulls together the concepts and material of the previous courses into comprehensive Defensive Templates against Angle 3 attacks. This course includes 4 Module Units comprised of 13 lessons. These 13 lessons teach different defensive methods within Integrated Eskrima’s unique Mode Defense model. Included are 4 Mode 1 Defensive Techniques; 3 Mode 2 Defensive Techniques; 3 Mode 3 Defensive Techniques; and 4 Mode 3 Defensive Techniques This makes a total of 13 modal defenses against Angle 3.

Course 7 – Angle 4 Defensive Templates

Course 7 pulls together the concepts and material of the previous courses into comprehensive Defensive Templates against Angle 4 attacks. This course includes 4 Module Units comprised of 18 lessons. These 18 lessons teach different defensive methods within Integrated Eskrima’s unique Mode Defense model. Included are 5 Mode 1 Defensive Techniques; 5 Mode 2 Defensive Techniques; 4 Mode 3 Defensive Techniques; and 4 Mode 4 Defensive Techniques This makes a total of 18 defensive techniques against Angle 4.
